Dr. Shawn G. Rhind, PhD, is a Senior Defence Scientist at Defence Research & Development Canada (DRDC) – Toronto Research Centre and an Associate Professor (Status) at the University of Toronto, internationally recognized for pioneering contributions to military physiology, trauma resuscitation, neurotrauma, and mental health research. He has advanced both mechanistic and translational science across trauma care, blast-related brain injury, operational stress physiology, and the biology of PTSD. His multidisciplinary research program integrates multi-omic biomarker discovery, advanced neuroimaging, precision therapeutics, and large-scale clinical studies, with landmark achievements including mechanistic advances in hypertonic resuscitation, remote ischemic conditioning, next-generation whole blood and dried plasma systems, and the first in vivo tau-PET evidence of early tauopathy in Special Operations Forces. As Canada’s national lead for key Five Eyes and NATO working groups on neurotrauma and military mental health, and with more than 150 scientific publications, Dr. Rhind has played a central role in shaping modern approaches to warfighter readiness, trauma resuscitation, brain health surveillance, and precision military medicine.
