Major Tristan M. Alie, MD, FRCPC

Originally from the Outaouais region in Quebec, Major Tristan Alie joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a Regular Force Medical Specialist in 2019, and currently posted to 1 Canadian Field Hospital. Major Alie completed a Masters in Human Genetics at McGill University (2006 – Montreal, QC), followed by medical school at McMaster University (2009 – Hamilton, ON). He completed a residency in Anesthesiology at McMaster (2014), and a fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at the University of Ottawa (2016 – Ottawa, ON). Major Alie currently practices Anesthesiology at Hopital Montfort (Ottawa, ON) and is a Lecturer in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Ottawa.

Joining the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) has pushed Major Alie’s medical practice in challenging and austere environments. As a Flight Surgeon, Major Alie participated on Critical Care Aeromedical Evacuation missions in Africa and Europe. He trained with and obtained qualification for the Royal Canadian Air Force’s Canadian Medical Emergency Resuscitation Team (CMERT), a damage control resuscitation capability positioned on Chinooks (CH-147). Currently he is a member of the Mobile Surgical Resuscitation Team (MSRT) capability; and medical co-lead of the Prolonged Field Care curriculum for Special Operations Medical Technicians.

Major Alie supports the CAF on Cold Weather related projects due to his personal and operational experience in this environment. Cold Weather related contributions extend from the field to the strategic. These include sharing movement, mobility and field craft skills in dismounted winter patrolling training; prehospital medical training development and delivery for the Arctic; advising on Winter mobility equipment procurement for the High North. In bridging the field to the boardroom, Major Alie’s goal is to ensure personnel, including medical, are able to effectively follow and support the tip of the spear in Cold Weather Operations. Essentially ensuring efforts are relevant and focused on the front-line soldier defending Canada’s interests in the North; one of the harshest and most challenging operational environments.
