Dr. Leif Sigurdson studied medicine at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and completed his surgery internship and residency at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 1999, he completed two years of fellowship training which included a year at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, focussing on microsurgery, trauma and craniofacial surgery. He joined the Section of Plastic Surgery at the University of Manitoba as an Associate Professor in 2008.
Since 1996, Dr. Sigurdson has volunteered on numerous international missions with Operation Smile travelling to Ecuador, China, Peru, Honduras, Bolivia, the Philippines, Paraguay, Madagascar and Russia to correct cleft lips and palates. In addition to his medical training, Dr. Sigurdson holds a Masters Degree in Public Health and Epidemiology from Dalhousie University and a Masters of Business Administration from St. Mary's University in Halifax.
Dr. Sigurdson's research has focussed on outcomes related to breast reconstruction, questionnaire development and clinical trials. His current area of research is related to international health, with the co-development of a clinical trial looking at outcomes with late cleft palate repair in developing countries. His administrative roles include Surgical Standards and leadership within the Department of Surgery.
He has enjoyed more than 20 years teaching residents and students and has served as the Plastic Surgery Program Director for eight of those years.
