Vice-Admiral Haydn Edmundson joined the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) in 1983. He completed his basic military and initial navy training on the West Coast before joining his first operational unit, HMCS PROVIDER, in Esquimalt, British Columbia.

Vice-Admiral Edmundson has extensive sea time including: multiple tours as a Navigation Officer; experience as Combat Officer in our new Canadian Patrol Frigates; Executive Officer of HMCS CALGARY during Operation APOLLO; and Commanding Officer of HMCS ATHABASKAN (during her modernization refit) and HMCS REGINA for which he is a “plank owner.”

His operational experience includes multiple deployments in the Pacific Rim region and deployments to the Arabian Gulf including a recent tour in Command of Combined Task Force 150, the maritime counter terrorism task force under US Combined Maritime Forces. Vice-Admiral Edmundson has significant experience with the United States Navy including a three-year tour as operations officer in the 3rd Fleet Command ship, the USS CORONADO. A highlight in his operational career was when Vice-Admiral Edmundson hung-up his dress blues, donned desert tan camouflage combats and deployed for one year to Afghanistan in support of Operation ATTENTION.

Vice-Admiral Edmundson has enjoyed several staff and headquarters positions including Canada Command and Naval Headquarters positions in Ottawa and Esquimalt. He has broad experience within Military Personnel Command (MPC) as Director Senior appointments, Director General Military Careers, Director General Military Personnel Support Services / Chief of Staff to the Commander of MPC, Deputy Commander of MPC and, since being promoted to Vice-Admiral in July 2019, as Commander-Designate of MPC.

Vice-Admiral Edmundson is a recipient of several Canadian Honours and he also received United States recognition including the Legion of Merit and Meritorious Service Medal. He has a Masters from the Royal Military College in Kingston, a Baccalaureate from Memorial University in Newfoundland and Labrador and is a graduate of the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College and National Security Programmes of the Canadian Forces College. He is the proud father of Ashley, his confident, professional, daughter who resides in Toronto. He resides in Ottawa with his wife Mollie and his dog Lady Cora.
